Artist Statement
Mike started his ceramics journey at Ypsilanti High School in the mid-1970s. He further developed his artistic skills while completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Eastern Michigan University (EMU), studying ceramics under the talented Susanne Stephenson and John Loree, and graduating with a double major in fine arts and mathematics along with a K-12 Teaching Certificate. He also earned a master’s degree in industrial technology, with an emphasis on CAD/CAM, at EMU. After a 37-year hiatus from the creative arts, Mike started playing in the “Mud” again in 2016 at the Space Studio. He continued his artistic revival in 2017 at the amazing Midland Center for the Arts (MCFTA) Ceramic Studio where he became a MCFTA Ceramics Studio School faculty member in 2020. He’s been in over 35 juried exhibitions, received Honorable 3D and Best 3D Awards, had the privilege of participating in a three-person exhibition, “Three Rivers…One Source,” at the Creative 360 Stage, Studios, & Gallery, a solo exhibition, "Actively Vulnerable" and 4 person exhibition, "Diverse Perspectives" at the amazing Art Reach Gallery. He’s having the time of his life with his artistic rebirth and seeking Ceramics Instructor opportunities for his students and himself that facilitate creative growth, personal development, experimentation, innovation, and change with an emphasis on being actively vulnerable with high doses of fun along the learning journey to be extremely rewarding. His hopes and intentions are to arouse endless interpretations of his sculptures, inspire creativity, experimentation, innovation, and change, and to light and carry the actively vulnerable torch forward.
